Retired and widowed Gloriana Jones is forging on with the plans she and her late husband dreamed of—bringing joy and happiness, one ice cream cone at a time, to Lake Unami. But bad weather is drowning her dream. A trip to Upstate NY is bittersweet for Nathan James. He is excited to see his first granddaughter but without his wife he's lonely. When his car breaks down, he heads to the only light he can see, an ice cream shop. With aid from a heavenly source, electricity sparks, but will the two weather the summer storms and find love a second time? Or will their hopes and dreams melt away?

Excerpt

“Do you mind if I wait until the tow truck gets here?” He plucked the wet shirt away from his chest with the long fingers of one tanned hand. “It must be electrical, even the radio stopped working.”

“No, you're welcome to hang around as long as you need.” Gloriana riffled through a cardboard box under the counter, pulled out an extra-large t-shirt, and tossed it to him. “Here you go. The restroom is through there.”

Mr. Gorgeous beamed a perfect toothy smile. “Thanks. I'll be right back.”

When he disappeared into the hallway, and the door clicked shut, Gloriana fanned her face. What the hot fudge was wrong with her? “Coffee. Make coffee.”

Character Interview — Nathan James

Interviewer     “We are in the small New Jersey community of Lake Unami. Recent big city to small-town entrepreneur Nathan James is in the interview hot seat. Welcome, Nathan. You have a beautiful apartment.”

Nathan           “Thank you, and thank you for having me.” He squirms in the chair a bit. “I’m not used to being the center of attention.”

Interviewer     “Don’t worry. The readers don’t bite. Well, most of them anyway. Tell us who you are.”

Nathan       Nathan sits up straighter in his chair. “I’m a freelance business consultant. I mostly help small businesses who are struggling with, or don’t want to struggle in the future, to get a handle on the nuts and bolts of running and maintaining their chosen field.”

Interviewer     “Hmm, that’s what you do, but not who you are. My readers want to know what goes on under the surface. For instance, I see a rainbow suncatcher in the window. Does that have special meaning? ”

Nathan       Back to fidgeting in his chair, Nathan taps a finger on the arm. “I’m sorry. I thought this was an interview about my work.” Then his caramel-colored eyes turn to the window and the sparkling suncatcher, then lets out a puff of air. “Rainbows mean promise and hope.”

Interviewer     “I read you are a widower. That must be tough.”

Nathan     “I am. My wife, Rachel, passed away several years ago.” Nathan’s gaze remains fixed on the suncatcher, but there is a deep vee between his eyebrows now. “I was so immersed in my work. I didn’t realize how sick she was. Then before you knew it, she was gone.”

Interviewer     “Oh, Nathan, I’m so sorry for your loss. How have you coped?”

Nathan     “For a while, I didn’t cope. I only survived. I dove deeper into my work. My daughter, Lacey, is the one who kept me from spiraling into total depression.”

Interviewer     Nathan turns those delicious caramel-colored eyes back to me, then continues.

Nathan        “Lacey gave me a beautiful granddaughter Adelle.” He leans forward and pulls out his phone. “Here, I have a picture of them.”

Interviewer     I take the phone and look at the picture. “They are both gorgeous. Now, tell us how you came to be in Lake Unami with a rainbow suncatcher in your window?”

Nathan        He swipes the phone in my hands. The picture or a woman with short multi-color hair and a pixie style appears standing in front of a storefront window. The glass is painted with rainbows, ice cream desserts, and silver stars. Rainbow Sprinkles is emblazoned in the colors of the prism. “This is Gloriana Jones. She is an amazing woman. At first, I felt like I was betraying my wife by the feelings she invoked, but my daughter and some inexplicable events showed me the error of my thinking.”

Interviewer     I lean forward caught up in Nathan’s change of body language and tone. “This sounds like an intriguing story.”

Thank you so much for having me today. Since my story is not in your usual genre I doubly grateful. But then I guess romance crosses time and location. D.V. 🦉
